Comments:
Aristolochia fimbriata or White-veined Dutchman's Pipe
is a beautiful
tender evergreen tropical
vine. In late Spring or early Summer, exotic blossoms of
greennish-white, purplish brown and yellow colors appear followed later
by ornate lantern-shaped seedpods.
Aristolochia fimbriata flowers are ornamental and resemble
pipes hence the common name. It is easily propagated from seeds
and performs well in part to full shade in well-drained mildly acidic or
mildly alkaline soil.
White-veined Dutchman's Pipe self-sows profusely so deadhead if
you do not wish to have any volunteer plants
next season. It is carefree and does not demand much attention.
Aristolochia fimbriata
tolerates drought well hence they make excellent xeriscaping plants.
It is an ideal plant for hanging baskets or containers. Mass plant
for an eye-catching groundcover.
Mulch well to protect from frost.
Freezing temperature will kill the top of the plant, however it will rebound
in Spring with new growth. This deer-resistant South American beatuy is a host plant for the larvee of
the yellow swallowtail butterfly. Many curious passer-by are
drawn by the
breath-taking blossoms of Aristolochia fimbriata.
