It is a member of the pea family. Green flowers on spikes and green leguminous pods interestingly appear from the limbs or branches of female trees only. Ceratonia silicua is propagated from recently ripe seeds or dried seeds presoaked in boiling water. It thrives well in warm temperate and sub-tropical climates and tolerates hot and humid coastal areas. Carob Tree starts to bear fruits at age 6-8 years. Plant several for pollination to take place; wind and insects are the main pollinators. Locust Tree has a broad, dense, semi-spherical crown which makes it an ideal shade tree in the landscape. St John's Bread pods are richer in protein compared to barley or oats, low in calories and are high in vitamins; they are used as animal feed and for human consumption. Ground pods are used as carob flour in baking, as a refreshing drink, in candies and ice cream; they are used as cocoa substitutes and as thickening agent in salad dressings and ice creams. The ground seeds of Ceratonia silicua are also used in medicines as diuretics and laxatives. The legumes provide a cheap source of carbohydrates for ethanol production. Jatropha curcas is pest resistant and can tolerate drought for up to 3 consecutive years, however the leaves will drop. This medicinal plant can be grown in any type of soil and is an excellent plant for countering soil erosion and pollution as it absorbs carbon dioxide. The leave drops are rich in nitrogen.
