is a small flowering fruit tree with a rounded bushy growth habit.
In mid-Summer, showy bright orange-red flowers appear followed by fruits.
Punica granatum can be propagated from seeds, cuttings or air layering.
It thrives well in a sunny or part shade environment. Grow
Punica granatum as a specimen
plant,
along pathways or as a bonsai. White
Pomegranate self-pollinates and is also pollinated by insects. This
suckering fruit tree is hardy to 10 degrees F. Mulch well to
preserve moisture. Punica granatum is carefree and medium growing; it
is a heavy bearer edible fruits with hard thin rind.
The ornamental looking fruits ripen in Fall; after picking, store them a little longer for
a tastier and juicier fruit. Water moderately; overwatering will
cause fruit to crack. Birds enjoy feasting on the seeds.
White Pomegranate fruits can be refrigerated for up
to seven months. The sweet-tart transparent pulp makes healthy
delicious drinks, jellies, cake flavoring, sauces, wine, syrup or used as a lovely
fruit bowl decoration. Cut back
Punica granatum
when 2' high to allow
an even number of about 4-5 shoots from all sides to form a
well-balanced plant. Remove suckers when necessary.
Punica granatum
makes an attractive hedge. It can also be container cultivated for
the deck or patio.
